Growing Career Pathways Through Registered Apprenticeship

The Lancaster Apprenticeship Expansion Initiative is a collaborative effort to increase access to high-quality registered apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship opportunities across Lancaster County. By partnering with employers, educators, workforce organizations, and community stakeholders, the initiative aims to connect more individuals to earn-and-learn career pathways while helping businesses build a skilled and sustainable workforce.

Building the Future Workforce Through Apprenticeship

Apprenticeship is a proven recruitment and retention strategy.

Apprenticeship for Every Industry

Registered apprenticeship programs provide a proven workforce development strategy that combines paid on-the-job training with classroom instruction, enabling participants to develop industry-recognized skills while earning a wage. As workforce demands continue to evolve across key sectors, apprenticeship serves as a valuable tool for talent development and retention.

The initiative focuses on expanding apprenticeship opportunities in both traditional and emerging industries throughout Lancaster County. Through employer engagement, technical assistance, and strategic partnerships, the program seeks to increase the number of registered apprenticeship opportunities available to local workers and job seekers.

In addition, the initiative supports the development of pre-apprenticeship programs that prepare individuals for successful entry into registered apprenticeships. These programs help participants build foundational skills, explore career options, and gain access to supportive services that create pathways to long-term employment and career advancement.

Apprenticeship in Action

Robotic WorX Pre-Apprenticeship

The Robotic WorX Robotics Technician Pre-Apprenticeship (PRAP) will equip high school students with hands-on experience in robotics and automation—skills that are increasingly essential across industries. The program will offer a clear pathway into manufacturing careers, culminating in a pre-apprenticeship credential that connects to post-secondary opportunities, including college, registered apprenticeships, or direct entry into the workforce. Robotic WorX started as an innovative career exploration and internship program in Lancaster County and has evolved into a program ready for pre-apprenticeship recognition, approval, and accelerated growth. Developed through a dynamic partnership between Precision Cobotics, a leading local automation company, and Millersville University, Robotic WorX represents a unique co-learning model: college students in the Applied Engineering program serve as mentors, guiding high school participants through real-world robotics applications and collaborative projects. The Lancaster County Workforce Development Board will serve as the official sponsor and fiscal agent for the Robotic WorX pre-apprenticeship program. In this capacity, the Board will deliver strategic resources, targeted outreach, and essential infrastructure to support the program’s growth. This partnership will also establish a replicable framework for future pre-apprenticeship sponsorships across diverse industry sectors—positioning Robotic WorX as a model for educational institutions, local employers, and community organizations.
